O'Malley and Education
As we have heard. Now Mayor O'Malley has to deal with the State taking over 11 city schools because of some serious problems. More on that later.
What does Mayor O'Malley have to say about the take over? This is nothing but politics. I have not heard him address the substance of the issue. Have you? If so please correct me.
Suffice it to say Federal and state laws requires State to take action in these instances. It isn't like Ehrlich wanted to take over the schools, but I am sure he is happy to do so for a lot of reasons (especially given it is an election year), but seriously, the State Board of Education really had no choice but to intervene. I was provided the following information on 4 of the 11 schools. Honestly, I would like to see the data on all eleven schools because I hope that I would not feel so depressed after reading about just these 4.
Southwestern:
8.9% of students can read proficiently.
1.6% of students are proficient at math.
For Southwestern’s freshman class of 2005, 99 out of 100 students will not pass their High School Assessment tests because they cannot read or perform math concepts.
Frederick Douglass:
15.8% of students read proficiently.
3.5% of students are proficient at math.
1.4% of students passed the biology component of their 2005 High School Assessment.
Patterson:
18.5% of students can read proficiently.
9.9% of students are proficient at math.
15.9% passed the English component of their 2005 High School Assessment.
Northwestern:
21% of students can read proficiently.
6.6% of students are proficient at math.
8.8% passed the government component of their 2005 High School Assessment.
Would you stand for this in Howard County. Would you send your students to a school like this?
In addition, 10% of the students passed their High School Assessment Test, students are absent on average 36 days .
Mayor O’Malley, increased city school funding less than one percent since 2003. Ehrlich, has increased city school funding by 28 percent since 2003.
When the school system almost went bankrupt who did O'Malley blame? Really. Who is playing politics with our education system? If O'Malley were Governor today would he seriously stand by and not allow his Board of Education take action in a situation like this? WWMD?
