I can only guess who Melissa might be. Well, Melissa, thanks for the FYI. That clears it up for me. It is intentional but misguided.
I looked at Michael Steele's website. Their is a big difference between “Michael Steele US Senate” and “Michael Steele US Senator” as their is “Melissa Ridgely Covolesky State Delegate” and “Melissa Ridgely Covolesky Candidate State Delegate” as their is "Ben Cardin Senate 2006" and "Ben Cardin Senator 2006" as their is "Mfume for US Senate" and "Mfume US Senator" etc etc blah blah blah.
Come on quit parsing words. What impression do you think the campaign site is leaving people?
Anyway, aside for the above comments it is still a very very nice website and the campaign has posted content on the ISSUES tab.
Here are the issues she presents and here is where I stand on the same issues.
Tax Relief for Vets - Yes
Tax Relief for Active Duty - Yes
Tax Relief for Elderly Property Owners - Yes (do you support Gail Bates legislation on the issue. She has been trying to get this passed for 2 years.)
Property Rights - Yes
Agriculture - Ok
Stem Cell - Right On the Mark
Homeland Security - Yes, but what is a Delegate going to do about it? Especially one in the minority and a freshman at that. Perhaps she would be more effective working for Dennis Schrader.
Law Enforcement - Yes (Of course. Who doesn't?). However, I take slight issue with her comment: "While crime is relatively low in our district...". Does she know this district? This is getting a little irritating. I live in 9A. 9A is not only Western Howard County. In a given year their will be 29 thefts, 11 burglaries, and 2 assualts in my "statistic area" which is very small. Howard County and District 9A are not immune nor is crime "relatively low" unless you live in Glenwood. Here look it up yourself.

As an experienced law enforcement military officer I would think she would take this much more seriously (or research it more carefully). The Eastern half of 9A is the most densely populated part of the district and where most of the votes come from and (coincidentally) most of the crime occurs. For Pete's Sake.
I said it before and I will say it again. District 9A is not Western Howard County. In 2002 their were over 60,000 votes cast for all candidates running to be our two Delegates - believe me, they didn't all come from Western Howard County.

She has a very nice website. But I am curious about her use of the term “State Delegate District 9A”. Shouldn’t it say “Candidate for….”

About the “Candidate for…” comment - I checked several other challenger websites (to include Mike Steele) and the general feeling is to use the name of the seat, not “Candidate for.” Just FYI.

Well, it's not like Delegate Miller spends a lot of time in the eastern section of 9A either. Perhaps your comments will make them both think more about serving "eastern" 9A. I think its great that there is a challenger. She seems to be a credible candidate. Challengers, even if they lose, make incumbents sharper. Besides the R central committee has had the opportunity to appoint way too many elected officials in recent years. Let the voters decide. Go Melissa.
A primary is a good thing. I see Delegate Miller in the Ellicott City area a lot. In fact he has attended my community summer picnic.
I have yet to see a candidate that could lead this end of the County in any stable, rational way. What about the uncontrolled growth? Have anyone taken that factor into tax rates, crime, and other issues realted to this district? Stance on the issues..Agriculture OK? Come on...strip malls, McMansions, poor land use planning. Where does it stop? Agriculture should have the comment "right on the mark" Don't forget where this County came from.
